La Opinión’s 3rd Annual Mujeres Destacadas / Exceptional Women Editorial Series and Awards Ceremony Honors 30 Outstanding Latinas

Los Angeles, CA (March 23, 2009) – La Opinión, the leading Spanish-language daily newspaper in the United States announces its 3 rd Annual Mujeres Destacadas / Exceptional Women Editorial Series and Awards Luncheon. The daily editorial series will highlight 30 Latinas in La Opinión throughout the month of March, International Women’s History Month.  The awards will be presented at a luncheon to be held at the Cathedral Plaza located in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday, March 26, 2009.

Thirty women from across the Southland, the “unsung heroes of the community,” were nominated by their peers and community partners in the categories of outstanding service in: community leadership, health advocacy, business/technology arts & culture and education on a volunteer or professional level.

“Latinas are often the driving force behind efforts to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods and Mujeres Destacadas is our opportunity to recognize these local heroes ,” stated Monica Lozano, CEO and Publisher of La Opinión.

A daily profile of each honoree continues to appear in La Opinión through the duration of March.  La Opinión’s weekend publications La OpiniónContigo will showcase the nominees in a special double page feature on March 22 and in La Opinión on the day of event, March 26. On March 29, the newspaper’s special Sunday magazine, Domingo, will publish a 4 page pictorial recap of the event. Sponsors such as Neilson, Staples, Wells Fargo, Hennessy and others have partnered to produce another extraordinary event to applaud these local women and their extraordinary efforts within the community.                                            

The awards luncheon will be held on Thursday, March 26, at the Cathedral Plaza in downtown Los Angeles. This year’s Keynote Speaker is the Honorable Gloria Molina, LA County Supervisor for the 1 st District.  Mistress of Ceremonies is Marcela Luevanos, a voice actor who also worked as an on-air personality for Spanish radio stations SBS and Univision .
