Half of New Latino Immigrants to U.S. Send Money Abroad
"About half (48% to 49%) of Latino immigrants who have come to the U.S. in the last 19 years say that in the last 12 months, they have sent money to someone living abroad -- a number that holds remarkably steady whether they have lived in the U.S. less than 6 years or between 13 and 19 years. A Gallup survey of more than 1,000 U.S. Latinos finds that the percentage of Latino immigrants who send money (i.e., remittances) abroad is steady for those who have been living in the U.S. less than 20 years, and drops among those who have been in the country for at least 20 years. The rate of sending remittances drops off further among Latinos born in the U.S. -- to 20%." Source: “Half of New Latino Immigrants to U.S. Send Money Abroad”, gallup.com, September 2009.

Country of Origin Profiles of U.S. Hispanics
"More than eight-in-ten Hispanics self-identify themselves as being either of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Salvadoran or Dominican origin. Mexican-Americans are by far the largest group, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the Hispanic population in the U.S. There are a range of differences between these five population groups—for example, in the share of each group that is foreign born, citizen (by birth or naturalization), and proficient in English."

U.S. Hispanics And The New Economic Reality
“How badly has the U.S. economy battered Hispanic families? The answer is not so simple. Two opposing schools of thought contend that, on one hand, Hispanics are less affected since this recession is largely the result of a credit crisis and substantial losses on Wall Street, and Hispanics were under-leveraged in terms of debt and, on average, had less money in equity securities. Another set of observers believe Hispanic households have been particularly hard hit by shrinking housing starts and an ailing contracting service industry. Their high level of unemployment hovers several percentage points above the national average and did not decline in July along with that of other ethnic groups."

A Place to Call Home: What Immigrants Say Now About Life in America
"The past seven years have seen ferocious debate over immigration, even as legislation has remained stalled. The United States admits more than 1 million immigrants a year, and the Census Bureau reports 12 percent of the population is foreign-born at 34.2 million. In addition, there are an estimated 12 million illegal or undocumented immigrants in the country. Fewer immigrants say they’re “extremely happy” in the United States than nine years ago, and the number who say they’d do it all over again has fallen. The study showed more immigrants phone home and send money regularly compared to 2002, and half of the immigrants surveyed say they mostly spend time with others from their birth country, a significant increase from seven years ago."

Hispanic Achievement Gap Persists
"Hispanics' participation in higher education continues to rise, yet their likelihood of graduating high school underprepared for college; their propensity to attend two-year schools; low levels of parent education; and limited financial resources pose formidable obstacles to achieving a baccalaureate degree, according to a new report released today by Educational Testing Service and the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE)."
