Latino Children: A Majority Are U.S.- Born Offspring of Immigrants
“Hispanics now make up 22% of all children under the age of 18 in the United States--up from 9% in 1980--and as their numbers have grown, their demographic profile has changed. A majority (52%) of the nation's 16 million Hispanic children are now "second generation," meaning they are the U.S.-born sons or daughters of at least one foreign-born parent, typically someone who came to this country in the immigration wave from Mexico, Central America and South America that began around 1980.”

Census Bureau Estimates Nearly Half of Children Under Age 5 Are Minorities
“The U.S. Census Bureau released national population estimates showing that our nation is becoming older and more racially and ethnically diverse. The estimates found that nearly half (47 percent) of the nation’s children younger than five were a minority in 2008, with 25 percent being Hispanic. For all children under 18, 44 percent were a minority and 22 percent were Hispanic.”

Through Boom and Bust: Minorities, Immigrants and Homeownership
“The boom-and-bust cycle in the U.S. housing market over the past decade and a half has generated greater gains and larger losses for minority groups than it has for whites, according to an analysis of housing, economic and demographic data by the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center. From 1995 through the middle of this decade, homeownership rates rose more rapidly among all minorities than among whites. But since the start of the housing bust in 2005, rates have fallen more steeply for two of the nation's largest minority groups-blacks and native-born Latinos-than for the rest of the population.”

New Research Finds Recession Has Greater Impact on Health of Parents than Children with Specific Findings on Hispanics
“The economic downturn is contributing to a decline in overall family health in the Hispanic community, with parents prioritizing their children's health over their own. While 44 percent of Hispanics consider it equally important for parents to take care of their own health and the health of their children, significantly more parents say the economic downturn has affected their own health and wellness compared to that of their children (69 percent vs. 59 percent).”

Predicting the Future: Hispanics in the 2010 Census
“Now that 2009 is before us, predictions for the future of Hispanics in the U.S. can look forward to 2010. Overall, the Hispanic lifeline is long and the outlook is good. However, what we think we know is changing. Call it the effects of a new era: the 2010 Census will bring about demographic revolution. Our prediction? Traditional stereotypes will be shattered as a new generation takes hold and the Hispanic household gets a makeover.”
